How to Grow Alocasia from Corm π°ππͺ΄
So you've got yourself a corm β exciting times! Growing an Alocasia from corm is one of the most rewarding things a plant lover can do. It takes a little patience, but watching that first shoot emerge is absolutely magical. Here's everything you need to know πΏ
What You'll Need
- Your Alocasia corm π°
- Your corm riser (included with your order!)
- A small pot, cup, or container
- Clean water
- A warm, bright spot out of direct sun
The Puddle Method π§
This is the method we use and recommend at Crazy-Plant-Lady β it's simple, effective, and lets you keep an eye on your corm's progress easily!
Step 1 β Set Up Your Corm Riser
Place your corm riser into your pot or container. Sit your corm on top of the riser with the flat end down and the pointy end facing up (some corms are rounder β that's totally fine!). The riser keeps the corm elevated so it's not sitting directly in water.
Step 2 β Add Your Water
Pour a small amount ofΒ water into the bottom of the container β just enough to create a shallow puddle beneath the corm. The water should not touch the corm itself. The moisture and humidity from the water below encourages the corm to sprout roots and shoots.
Top up the water regularly to maintain that puddle level, and change the water every few days to keep it fresh.
Step 3 β Warmth & Light
Place your setup somewhere warm (ideally 22β27Β°C) with bright indirect light. The warmer and more humid the environment, the faster your corm will get going. A propagation box or humidity dome will really speed things up if you have one!
Step 4 β Be Patient π±
Sprouting can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks plusΒ depending on the variety and conditions. Check on it every few days β look for tiny white roots appearing at the base of the corm, or a little green or pink shoot emerging from the top. Both are signs it's working!
Step 5 β Roots & Shoots Appearing!
Once you can see roots establishing and a shoot pushing through, you're well on your way! Keep the puddle topped up and resist the urge to repot too soon β let it grow a couple of leaves and build a decent root system first.
Step 6 β Potting Up
Once your baby has 2β3 leaves and a good root system, it's time to pot up! Choose your preferred substrate β whatever you love growing your Alocasias in works great here. Just make sure it's well-draining so those roots stay happy and healthy.
Everyone's journey is different β find your groove and trust your instincts. You've got this! π±
Ongoing Care πΏ
- Light: Bright indirect light β avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves
- Humidity: 60β80% β a humidifier is your best friend
- Watering: Water when the top inch of substrate feels dry; never let it sit in water
- Temperature: 18β27Β°C; keep away from cold draughts and radiators
- Feeding: A balanced liquid fertiliser every 2β4 weeks during the growing season
A Note on Variegation π
Variegation cannot be guaranteed when growing from corm β that's part of the magic and the mystery! Each plant is completely unique. Whatever she becomes, she'll be spectacular.
